Train like Milo

Milo of Croton was a great wrestler who lived in ancient Greece. He won many Olympic Gold and left behind a legacy of great strength and super human feats. One such feat was lifting a fully grown bull on his shoulders. Most people were astounded by this sheer display of strength and called him 'gifted' or a 'superhero'. But Milo was not a God - he just knew how to train like a Champion.

What would you have done if you were to achieve the feat of carrying a bull ? How would you have trained ? May start by attempting it everyday till you hopefully pulled of the stunt one fine day provided you didn't suffer from a bad case of hernia. What Milo did was simple genius.

Milo picked up a new born calf and put it on his shoulders and walked the city of Croton day after day, week after week and month after month. As the calf grew, so did Milo's strength. So lifting the bull wasn't just a one-time feat for Milo as he could do it repeatedly.

I've seen this phenomenon repeat many time in endeavors like Chess where the sights are directly set at the near impossible - "become the next Vishy Anand" - but not knowing how to train for that. The vision is great but the effort needs to be in line.

Instead, start today. Be cognizant of your current level and look for incremental changes. step by step. day by day. puzzle by puzzle. lap by lap. Over time, you'd be surprised how far you can go. This is exactly our philosophy of training and if you already haven't, please check out the Chesskid Trainer which will help you achieve your rating goals.
